Humble Beginnings in Theater
From her earliest days treading the boards of community theater in Ohio to becoming an accomplished actor and executive producer, Kelley Poling’s story is one of resilience, artistry, and an unwavering commitment to growth. Her journey began at eight years old, performing in local theater alongside friends, where she discovered the joy of storytelling and the camaraderie of creative collaboration. Those summer days in the theater laid the foundation for a career that would combine her love of acting with a unique set of skills that set her apart.
Yet, like many young performers, Kelley’s path was not without detours. As she grew older, athletics temporarily took precedence over acting. But while her focus may have shifted, the pull of storytelling and the thrill of performance never truly faded. Deep within, the stage remained a calling—a place where she could express herself, challenge her abilities, and connect with audiences on an emotional level.
The Fencing Connection: A Rekindled Passion
What reignited her passion? It was her love for classical fencing. Inspired by the swashbuckling charisma of cinematic icons like Errol Flynn, known for his adventurous spirit, Basil Rathbone, admired for his precision and technique, and Grace Kelly, who embodied elegance and strength, Kelley envisioned herself wielding a Smallsword on screen, marrying her hard-earned skills with the magic of storytelling. For Kelley, the idea of fencing in a movie remains a dream that continues to push her forward—a dream that even a thousand films wouldn’t diminish.
“When you work hard most of your life to be good at a skill, you live to show it off and tell a story at the same time,” Kelley explains, referencing her passion not only for weapons choreography but also for stories that entertain, challenge, and inspire.
A Multifaceted Talent
Kelley’s background is as unique as it is diverse. A Classical Fencer and Celtic fiddle player, she brings a multifaceted approach to her performances. Her expertise in handling stage and screen weapons adds authenticity to her roles, particularly in action films and historical dramas. This rare skill allows her to connect deeply with the characters she plays, especially those requiring physicality and precision, such as military personnel or figures engaged in combat. Beyond the realism it lends to her craft, her proficiency also enhances safety on set. For Kelley, ensuring a secure and controlled environment during fight scenes is paramount.
Choosing the Right Roles
But Kelley’s dedication to her craft goes far beyond technical skills. As an actor, she is drawn to projects that challenge her. She is meticulous in her approach, carefully evaluating each role to ensure it resonates with her personal instincts and professional goals. “I have to have a connection to the character,” she reflects. “I ask myself if I can relate to the character’s motivations, emotions, and experiences.” The complexity of a role, the quality of the story, and the opportunity to work with inspiring directors, writers, or co-stars are all factors she weighs carefully when choosing her next project.
At the heart of Kelley’s career lies an insatiable drive for growth. “My main motivation is challenge and growth when it comes to acting,” she shares. For Kelley, acting is an endless journey of discovery—about herself, her fellow creatives, and the audiences who find joy in the stories they create together. The industry, she admits, isn’t easy, but it is this very difficulty that fuels her passion.
Stepping into Leadership
Her accomplishments thus far are a testament to that unwavering commitment. Joining esteemed organizations like SAG-AFTRA and the Television Academy marked pivotal milestones in her career, validating years of hard work and perseverance. More recently, Kelley has stepped into the role of Executive Producer, a natural evolution for someone deeply invested in the art and business of storytelling. In February 2025, she will begin production on The Giant, a television series in which she also plays a series regular.
Redefining Success
Reflecting on her achievements, Kelley remains grounded in her definition of success. For her, success isn’t measured solely by accolades or financial stability. Instead, it’s about making a difference—inspiring even just one person to take a positive step toward their dreams. She recalls a young performer she once mentored in a community theater production who, years later, reached out to share how Kelley’s encouragement gave them the confidence to pursue their passion for acting. Moments like these, Kelley believes, define true success. “If I can make a difference in even just one person’s life that needed a nudge to do something good for themselves or for someone else, I am successful,” she says.
What Lies Ahead
Looking ahead, Kelley’s schedule is brimming with opportunity. She begins 2025 with a supporting role in a film, followed closely by her work on The Giant. As both an actor and producer, she is stepping into her power—bridging the gaps she’s long aspired to close. Whether it’s crafting dynamic fight scenes, deepening her connection to characters, or mastering the intricacies of storytelling from both sides of the camera, Kelley is pushing herself further, always striving to elevate her art.
